The Next Brilliant Career

To mark the launch of its series My Brilliant Career, Netflix is partnering with the Australian Writers' Guild (AWG) and eight state and territory screen agencies, including Screen Tasmania, to launch The Next Brilliant Career: a development program supporting emerging Australian writers and advancing diversity in the local screen industry.

The program is open to emerging writers across Australia who identify as women or non-binary, and invites them to submit an original story concept for the chance to pitch it directly to Netflix and receive structured feedback in developing their story for screens.

What's on offer?

One writer will be selected from each state and territory, eight in total, to attend a Pitch Day with Netflix executives in Sydney. Selected participants will present their story directly to Netflix and receive in-room feedback, with the opportunity to refine their concept and receive further written feedback afterwards. Travel and accommodation to attend the pitch day will be arranged for participants travelling from outside Sydney.

Being selected doesn't guarantee that Netflix will develop a participant's story or provide funding, but it offers a rare opportunity to have an original idea heard, and developed, by a major streamer.

Who can apply?

Applicants must be 18 or older, an Australian resident, identify as a woman or non-binary, and hold between one and three reportable writer credits on a commercially released short film, film or television series that has screened at a recognised film festival and/or been supported by a state or federal screen agency. Full-time students are not eligible. Full eligibility criteria and application requirements are available on the application portal.

Key dates

Applications open 4 August 2026 and close 18 August 2026. Selected participants will be notified in late September 2026, ahead of the Pitch Day in Sydney on 6 October 2026.

The Program and application window

The Next Brilliant Career invites emerging Australian writers who identify as women or non-binary to submit an original concept for the opportunity to pitch their work to Netflix and receive structured feedback in developing the story for screen. 

Application period: 4 August 2026 – 18 August 2026 (Closing Date). One application is permitted per person; group applications are not accepted. You will not be able to resubmit your application if you make an error, so please take time in submitting. 

Only successful applicants will receive further correspondence once the application window closes. A representative from Netflix will contact you via the phone and/or email address provided in this application on 28 September 2026. If you do not hear from us by this date, we are grateful for your application but you will not be progressing in the program.
